Drawbacks of the ISO 9001:1994 standard and asset of the new ISO 9001:2000 standard
The reason for amendment of the standard consisted in the following fundamental drawbacks of the standard original version:
Focused too much on industrial production
Focused on the individual elements, not on the whole
Little attention paid to the advancement of activities
Overly static model
Very detailed
Not easy to understand
Little focused on customer
Mainly in small businesses, there were problems with the focus on the individual elements of the standard; the activities are often combined, which means that there are more elements to be assessed in one activity. Should a directive be consistently established for every element according to the standard, it would be necessary to have a number of documents for every process - activity, which is not practical. Also the focus on industrial production that is often a lot production created in firms with piece production problems with understanding the standard requirements. It was extraordinarily difficult for service providing companies to explain such requirements. Based on the survey of criticism of these drawbacks the new standard includes the following new requirements for the form of the new standards:
Less of written documentation relating to the guidelines
Easier implementation in the management system
Pressure on continuous improvements
Focus on processes, model with processes instead of thinking in elements
Compatibility with other management standards
Focus on customer satisfaction
Focus on practice
Other aspects applied in creation of the new standard:
Possibility to be combined with the environmental management according to ISO 14 001
